 Many visitors to Mongolian pass through on the Trans Mongolian Express, as part of their journey from Moscow to Beijing. Others fly into Mongolia and take the train out, to Russia or China. It's a great way to travel, especially the Ulaanbaatar to Beijing route which gives a sunset view over the desert, and a glimpse of the Great Wall the next day.
Mongolian trains are comfortable and usually well serviced. It is also interesting to witness first hand the goings on on this busy trade route between three big countries. If your ticket is booked independently, you are more likely to share carriages with Mongolians, Russians or Chinese! However, organised as part of a tour you will probably be in carriages reserved for foreigners.
