Bogd Khan Uul National Park is the oldest national park in the world, dating back to 1783. The mountain lies to the immediate south of Ulaanbaatar, the highest mountain of the park being Tsetseegun Uul, at 2256m. In the south of the park lies Manzshir Khiid, a monastery which, like many others, was destroyed in the Stalinist purges of 1937. It has since been rebuilt as a museum, and its ruins lie to the side.
The surrounding scenery is quite beautiful, especially in July and August when the hills are alive with mountain flowers. There are ger camps in the grounds for those who want to stay the night, although it is possible to visit for a day trip. Hikers might also like to try the difficult hike over the mountains back to Ulaanbaatar.

Khustain Nuruu National Park lies 80km to the West of Ulaanbaatar. It is a large reserve home to the 'takhi', the Mongolian Wild horse better known as the Przewalski.
The species was extinct in Mongolia in the 1960's, but due to a huge regeneration project in Eastern Eurpoean zoos, the species was reintroduced to its motherland in the early 1990's.
There is a ger camp inside the park, and it makes a great overnight trip from the city. You are not guaranteed to see the horses (the best chance is at dawn and dusk), but the success rate is high. Horse riding is also available.
The reserve also do long stay ecovolunteer projects - see their site for more details.
If you'd like to see the wild horses, look here . The camp is open year round.

Mongolian Resorts Guest House to stay open this winter as winter tourism increases in Mongolia.
Due to an increasing number of tourists arriving in the latter months
of this year, Mongolian Resorts have decided to keep their guesthouse
open year round. The guesthouse has recently moved to a new building
which has been completely renovated to a higher standard than that
expected of the usual backpacker guesthouse or hostel. That, in
addition to a free wireless internet service throughout, and its quiet
but central location, has been attracting business travellers as well
as the usual tourist crowd.

Obtaining a Visa for Mongolia is a relatively painless and quick
process. Visas are available for various periods of time but as a
tourist a 30 day single entry visa is the norm, any longer would
require an invitation letter and a clear statement of purpose
concerning your stay in Mongolia. For a 30 day single entry visa an
invitation letter is not normally necessary. Should an invitation
letter be required, Mongolian Resorts will be happy to help you with this. We have a full multilingual expat staff working who are always
happy to help with visa and travel arrangements. We also have an
office in the UK to assist in these matters.
