Khustain Nuruu National Park lies 80km to the West of Ulaanbaatar.  It is a large reserve home to the 'takhi', the Mongolian Wild horse better known as the Przewalski.

The species was extinct in Mongolia in the 1960's, but due to a huge regeneration project in Eastern Eurpoean zoos, the species was reintroduced to its motherland in the early 1990's.

There is a ger camp inside the park, and it makes a great overnight trip from the city.  You are not guaranteed to see the horses (the best chance is at dawn and dusk), but the success rate is high.  Horse riding is also available.
